Directing Safety in Mining

A corporate governance capability assessment and planning tool for the mining sector

Research tells us that safety starts from ‘the top’. To advance this, the ‘Directing Safety in Mining’ tool helps mining company directors and those with governance responsibilities shape a new safety agenda from the top.

This platform was originally developed by ECU’s Centre for Work and Wellbeing and funded SafeWork New South Wales. It has since been revised for Western Australia’s mining industry by ECU’s Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Centre, with funding support from the WA Government’s MARS Program.

About Directing Safety in Mining

The role of business in addressing environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges has come to the fore in the last decade or so. However, more work is needed to address employee health, safety and wellbeing. Indeed, many major corporations have struggled to greatly reduce workplace injuries, illness and fatalities, despite a strong desire to do so.
This ‘Directing Safety in Mining’ tool is designed to ‘nudge’ company directors to progress a renewed work health and safety agenda in Australian mining and beyond.
